A field of 16 pairs contested the sponsorship trials over two sessions on 23 & 25th February.
The overall winners were Bill Tucker and Alan Douglas on 200.5 matchpoints closely followed by Roman Smolski and Vera Petty on 196.5. Craig Hutton and Steve Ball were joint third with David Cordon and Julia Lunn on 177.5 and these two pairs completed the qualifiers in the open field.
The final sessions of both events were held on Friday 19th February and there were close finishes in both games. In the Men's pairs Jim Leitch and Gordon Bussell tied for first place with Roman Smolski and David Sykes on 174 matchpoints. Phil Shadick and Steve Ball were third on 166.5.
In the Ladies event, Magda Farag and Sheena Rayner prevailed over Jane Smith and Gertie Barker by 145 to 141. Vera Petty and Sally Sykes were third on 140.

Bermuda National Teams 2009

The team of Vera Petty, Roman Smolski, David and Sally Sykes were comprehensive winners of the Bermuda National Teams played over two sessions on Sunday 13th December. They accumulated 166 Victory points well ahead of the second placed team of Alan Douglas, Jean Johnson, Tony Saunders and Charles Hall on 132 VPs. The third placed team comprised Steve Ball, Linda Pollett, Rachael Gosling and Craig Hutton on 97 VPs. A total of ten teams played a round robin of nine seven-board matches. The event was expertly directed by Jack Rhind.

Christmas Party and 2009 Prize Giving

The Christmas Party was a great sucess. See below for some photos of the party and Prize Giving.
There was a spectacularly tight finish to the Bermuda National Pairs on Friday 6th November. The joint winners on 288 matchpoints were Elizabeth McKee and John Glynn who tied with Linda and Bill Pollett. Congratulations to both pairs who just pipped the more established pairing of Jean Johnson and Joe Wakefield (with 287.5 mps!) into third. Whilst scores were being checked, an error was discovered but amazingly it didn't affect the winners.
